Poem of the Day

Summer Days of Old

The dew dried up at daybreak,
The plowing raised a cloud,
The air was still and heavy,
No breath of peace allowed;

Into the forest gladly ran
The children after chores,
Chasing after shady spots
And fairy rings and mounds;

Through the trees, the summer dimmed,
Sparkling sky-specks flickered,
’Mid humming wings and trills of birds,
Upon the moss they rested;

Who knows what dreams those dreamers dreamed?
Who knows what happened to them?
Who knows if e’er their dreams came true,
Or vanished without requiem?

Poem of the Day

Grandmommy's Robe

A silken robe of palest blue,
Wound 'round its hem was creamy lace,
It wrapped me like a kiss of dew,
Like love reflected in her face;

I trailed around, a child too small,
Pretentiously properly grand,
A Cinderella at the ball,
Waltzing with no visible band;

I postured up and down the halls,
As melodies rose from below -
My arias with La Callas -
Deafening off-key crescendo;

Indulgent accolades followed
My dramatic operatics,
Her sweet embrace – ah, Emeraude –
In that robe, love’s lingered fabric.

Freedom on Inauguration Day

The news channels report that today's Inaugural Speech will focus on Freedom. How ironic, because Freedom seems to be diminishing in our country. Freedom in America has always meant that American citizens enjoy the right to live in a free society -- freedom to worship, freedom to express, freedom to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Today, Freedom does not apply to everyone -- we all do not have the same rights as each other. Some are being denied rights that others enjoy. This denial of rights is based upon prejudice. We are told that we need to focus on "family values," that "family values" are what can bring us all together. We are told that our current Administration places Family Values high on its legislative priority list. We are told that "liberal values" are not "America's values" -- that morality and family values need to be protected from liberals. Since when have liberal values -- education, healthcare, equal rights for all -- been so awful? Are not "family values" something to be addressed by FAMILIES?

In our country today, many rights to privacy are being trampled on in the name of "homeland security." In our country today, gays and lesbians are being denied rights that "straight" people enjoy -- gays and lesbians are denied their right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." How is it possible that we are allowing our government to develop and pass "Jim Crow" laws that discriminate against our gays and lesbians? Gays and Lesbians are citizens of the United States, they pay taxes just like "straight" citizens -- how can we allow even one citizen of the United States to be discriminated against through legislation? Diminishing even one citizen's rights cannot possible be a "Family Value."

In a country founded on the right to religious freedom, how can we allow one religious group to dictate how all of us "should" live? What does religion have to do with sexual preference, for example? Nothing. Yet, somehow we have allowed a large group of conservative Christians to begin the downhill slide of legislating so-called "morality" (in the guise of "family values") -- What in the world are we doing legislating how people live?

One group of American citizens is composed of conservative Christians, but they are only ONE group. Their self-rightouesness does not make them right. They are not the entire nation, they do not represent the entire nation. We are a diverse nation, yet they want to erase diversity. They want to force everyone to live the way THEY determine we should live. They are a powerful group, and they are led by and encouraged by the current Administration. Our Administration is supposed to represent ALL of the citizens of this country. It does not.

How can we allow our government to deny diversity? It is not the job of the United States government to impose the values of one group upon the entire nation. Is that not exactly from what we are supposedly liberating Iraq? "Operation Freedom?" In today's Inaugural Speech, we will hear about Freedom, and how we are spreading Freedom around the world. We will not hear the truth. We will not be told that while our Administration "spreads Freedom around the world," our Administration plans to legislate discrimination against some of our own citizens. "Operation Freedom" does not exist within the United States of America. The irony is clear.

As we listen today to an Inaugural Speech filled with patriotic, stirring words that focus on Freedom, I hope our media tells the truth about this Administration's concept of "Freedom" in today's world. I hope our citizens realize the truth: we are losing our Freedoms, and we have allowed a fraudulent and deceptive catch-phrase mentality to become our national "identity" -- our reality. We have allowed patriotism to equate with prejudice and fear, and we have become an international disgrace. "Freedom?" It is slipping away from us, one precious right after another.

Our founders, our forefathers and our foremothers, our activists -- our citizens -- have fought and died for over 200 years for Equality and Freedom. We are supposed to be the Land of the Free. I hope America can look in the mirror and see that we have allowed ourselves to become the Land of the Some-Are-More-Free-Than-Others.

Poem of the Day

In My Solitude

“You haunt me . . .”

An old refrain
Plays;
Starlit darkness
Falls.

Half of my soul
Drifts;
Eternity
Ends.

I am alone,
With echoes.

Another life
Calls;
As if the sea
Knows.

Waves caress and
Kiss;
Embracing me
Less.

I am alone,
With echoes.

My solitude
Sings;
As our heartbeat
Slows.

Poem of the Day

Tempest Tossed

Tempest tossed, through stormy seas,

Wind and rain abound,

Like a sailor out upon the waves,

With no peace ever found;

Driven on through day and night,

By fierce compelling fire ~

Create! Burning passionate,

Crashing with desire;

My ship, a-battered to and fro,

My helmsman's the devil's own;

My fevered-brain first high then low ~

Create! Ah, had I but known . . .

Tempest tossed, battered down,

Suddenly skies shine clear,

Land ho! My work is done ~

I drift - the shore is near;

Gently rolls the tide,

Gently sails my ship,

A respite, like cool water,

Upon my parched lips.

A cry from my devil-helmsman -

"Aloft!" - the sails snap;

Driven out to sea again,

My creativity a trap.

She was a goddess,
Always taller and faster;
There goes my sister.

Naked In Wonderland
Naked, I pass through,
Like Alice in Wonderland;
A mirror of life.

As Breathing

Sometimes I inhale;
an intoxication of sensation
lifts me lightly
as a boat is lifted
by sweet swelling sails aloft. . .
filled with perfumes of spring
and summer, fall
and winter, past
and future. . .
crushed and broken grasses,
berries swollen-ripe and oozing
flavored scent. . .
chewing the thickness of fragrant flowers,
then suffocating humidity
until
rain coming
and then rain gone. . .
sneezing in the dust of fall and the first
scent of burning turning
into cold-penetrating stabbing
thieving furious icy air. . .

Sometimes I inhale;
an intoxication of sensation
choking in the smell of death
decaying drunkenly in darkness,
gasping, grasping
no hope
just a searing
that suddenly subsides,
leaving me shaking. . .
then ethereal eucalyptus –
not a cure
just a comfort. . .

Sometimes I inhale;
without thinking, without smelling
any particular particle;
automatic breath of life,
the pedestrian transformed
into being,
existing mindless
thoughtless effortless
yet crucial
to bring into me those
intoxications of sensation. . .

I have begun to think of you as breathing.

Poem of the Day

My Heart As One

A world of pain and darkness
has now imprisoned me
but your peaceful world beckons
with the light to set me free . . .

Across my world and into yours
you have made the bridge appear,
no prison’s pain can hold me back
when I know your heart is near . . .

Your voice is crashing thunder,
and gentle falling rain,
it is a quiet lullaby at dawn,
and the rolling of the waves
I hear you in the whistle-blow,
I feel you in the sun –
and the softest stirring breeze that blows –
isn’t that the echo of your soul –
a caress of love forever mine
that mends my heart as one

I will run into tomorrow
a smile upon my face,
I will find the stars in heaven
and at last will know my place . . .

Your voice will always find me
and guide me on my way
as I cross the bridge divine
till we meet again, one day . . .

Your voice is crashing thunder,
and gentle falling rain,
it is a quiet lullaby at dawn,
and the rolling of the waves
I hear you in the whistle-blow,
I feel you in the sun –
and the softest stirring breeze that blows –
isn’t that the echo of your soul –
a caress of love forever mine
that mends my heart as one.
