My Daughter

 

I know that look,

her almost smile,

like rarest treasure

seldom captured,

yet precious requisite

for happiness;

her smile ~

behind it safely

stay her secrets,

in her Mona Lisa heart;

she's mine ~

shining and strong and free.

The Man On The Cross

 

His body,

Broken and twisted;

Nails driven

Joyfully

Through flesh and bone;

His hands and feet.

 

Gouged

By a crown of thorns,

Arched against

Splintered wood,

Into His eyes and mouth

Drips blood. 

 

His mind,

A gray fog of pain;

His body

Hurts

Beyond suffering,

Yet He is conscious. 

 

There is no relief,

No sanctuary from this horror. 

 

He trembles;

From parched throat

A cry echoes

Through the ages –

“O Lord,

Why hast Thou forsaken me?”

His head drops.

 

I stand

Before Him

Who suffers for my sake,

So I suffer not

Abandonment

And pain. 

 

My

Unbearable

Realization,

Inhaling

Shame and Guilt. 

 

A shaft

Of sunlight;

The head lifts;

 

He smiles at me,

And dies.

In The Smallness of My Soul 

Embers burn on

fiery leaves of death

raging tumbling

hurricaned

echoing 

immensity

punching like a boxer

looming forever

through ragged breath

sweatstained 

somewhere

breezes blow soft

butterfly kisses

silent wishes

crying 

in the smallness of my soul.

Driving South

 

~ Magnolias ~

 

 

You smell them first

in Alabama;

a gentle spritz in the air,

tickling your nose

with anticipation ~

 

By Mississippi you know you are

in The South;

their scent heavy now

with hot promise

a lazy weight in the air ~ 

 

Louisiana calls to you

echoing a past;

both grand and foreign,

shaming Emeraude

with unfathomable glory ~

 

Then, you taste it stuck

in the back of your throat;

clogging your nostrils

grotesquely pungent with decay . . .

yet irresistible.

Heathcliff

I’ll be your Heathcliff,

straining to hear your voice

in the wild winds

that tear across the winter moors,

whirling and screaming

their pain; 

I’ll be your Heathcliff,

lying awake at night

in case your cold fingers

come scratching at my window,

clawing and grasping

their way in; 

I’ll be your Heathcliff,

slowly dying inside

as you frivolously meander

hand in hand with another,

pretending she fills your soul

overflowing; 

I’ll be your Heathcliff,

when Hell freezes over

and the sunlight comes again

across the summer moors,

through my window

I’ll let you in again.
